Increasingly long working hours, disjointed social circles and higher expectations have eroded the traditional routes to finding a mate in the UK and already, as many as six million Britons have tried dating online.

Although the resistance attached to using UK dating agencies is decreasing, many people assume it's only desperate Bridget Jones-types in a state of perpetual panic over the lack of romance in their lives that ever register with an agency.

However, exclusive UK dating agencies are reporting a rise in turnover despite their joining fees of up to £7000. It seems most of their clients are hoping that although money can't buy you love, it can get you a date with one of Britain's well-heeled social climbers.

The anonymity of online dating, is proving to be the big attraction with many signing up initially just to test the waters, but who are soon out there dating. A combination of loneliness and curiosity has many circling the dating scene, browsing online ads, reading profiles, and cautiously experimenting with love on the Internet.

In particular high-earning professionals who haven't time to run down to their local wine bar to meet their match after a 12-hour day but do have plenty of money to invest in their search for romance, are signing up to online dating sites.

While it is a pretty cost effective way to find a date, the UK dating industry is now worth about £600m and online sites are diversifying quickly to cater for the more focused needs of demanding singles. Senior dating, Christian dating, Jewish dating and lesbian dating agencies have all emerged to stir up passion and harvest fees.

UK dating agencies are battling their international counterparts though and with almost 900 online agencies in operation the race is on to offer more value-added services and unique content. Personality and compatibility tests, criminal record checks, handwriting analysis and video profiles are merging.

And if developments in the United States are anything to go by, UK dating agency members should soon be able to sign up to a text alert service which sends you a photo of your online favourite and alerts you when he or she is in your vicinity.

Who knows! It may not be long before online dating becomes so accepted that that couples will no longer feel the need to lie about where they met.
