One of the first choices you will need to make when you join an Internet dating site is the degree of anonymity you chose.

In most cases you will be offered the opportunity to load a photo and if you are to be successful in your quest its a pretty important part of the deal.

Even though you show a picture you will not have to list any contact details so only those who already know you will be able to make personal contact.

The Value of a Photo

No matter what your profile says, potential dates will check out your photo before ever reading your carefully-worded text. So you need to make sure your photo presents you as you would wish to be seen.

If you dont look like a film star a photo does not destroy your chances. Remember a dating site is no different to a pub or a church hall and many of the nicest people in the world share a weight problem or a wart or two and may breath a sigh of relief to see somebody "real" seeking company. How you want to appear depends on the type of date you want to attract. The same goes for submitting old photos - you'll never live up to your youthful appearance in real life.

Either way keep your chin up to avoid any dubious rolls of fat appearing underneath it. Women could try wearing heavier make up than usual as it will define your features but don't go overboard: you need to look natural, not caked in cement.

Taking Photos at Home

The best bet for home portraits is to use a digital camera which will give you plenty of choice and also make loading to a computer so much easier. Try taking pictures both indoors and outside.

Soft light in the early morning or late evening is far more flattering than harsh mid-day light which casts heavy shadows and accentuates any lines on your face, so choose your time of day carefully. Generally a flash is more hash and adds a sinster back light.

Above all try to relax, look natural, and exude an air of quiet confidence. Its all part of the first hurdle; getting somebody to stop long enough to read your profile.
