“All children are a gift from God” Psalm 127:3
The tradition of giving a gift to mark the new arrival of a new born baby has been around for centuries and can be seen as giving something back for the miraculous gift of a new life.
Whether the new baby is yours or that of a close friend or family member it is always a time for celebration. To mark this special occasion it is always nice to find an extra special new baby gift and one that baby can enjoy and benefit from.
When considering what to buy it is helpful to understand when a baby’s development takes place. During their first month a new born's senses are still quite limited. Their eyes can only focus 8 to 10 inches from their face without any details, their ears can only pick up high pitch and low pitch sounds and their little hands are still balled up or in a fist form. For the first month, ideal toys and gifts can include: Crib and cradle mobiles, child-safe mirrors, music boxes and soft stuffed toys.
In the second month a baby is able to wave and kick their arms and legs, they start to discover they can cause things to happen and they if they hear a sound they will look in the direction that it came from. Suitable learning baby gifts, available in the UK for the second month, can include: Activity quilts, floor gyms and toys that have a high contrast geometric design.
When a baby enters its third month in life, it can start to hold up its head when place on tummy, it can clasp small objects in its hand and it can look at an object that is making a noise. For the third month the following will be beneficial and appeal to them: Stuffed toys that make a noise when shaken or squeezed, soft rattles, child-safe mirrors and floor gyms.
However, there is also nothing wrong with buying something that a baby may be able to use in a few months time.
