With any area of skin care, including treating and preventing wrinkles, it is crucial that you establish your skin type. There is no point saturating oily skin with heavy creams as this will lead to even greasier pores; likewise, over cleansing and toning excessively dry skin will merely exacerbate any problem areas.

So what is your skin type?

Read through the following five categories to work out which one sounds most like you. Once you have done this selecting the correct anti wrinkle skin care products will be a lot easier and you won't have to waste a fortune on unsuitable creams and treatments, either.

Dry

You'll know if you've got dry skin, as it will feel tight and may even suffer from flaking in some places. If there are any oily areas at all, you might be better off opting for a wrinkle cream that has been formulated for combination skins.

Normal

If you do not have any overly dry or overly oily areas of skin, count yourself lucky! You have normal, healthy skin and are suited to a vast range of skin care products.

Oily

If you have a greasy skin type, there will be excess shine on the face, particularly around the nose and forehead. Having oily skin has its good points and its bad points - whilst the excess oil that you naturally generate means you should be able to use heavy wrinkle creams without any adverse reactions, it does mean that you are more prone to spots and oil bumps.

Combination

Combination skin means that you have a mixture of oily skin and dry skin. The oily areas tend to be around what is known as the T-zone; down the nose and across the forehead. Dry areas are usually the cheeks and jaw line. It is estimated that half of the women in the UK have a combination skin type so don't fret - there are plenty of wrinkle creams that have been specifically designed to care for skin like yours.

Sensitive skin

Whichever one of the above four skin types you have, you may also fall into the sensitive skin category. Sensitive skin can be dry, combination or oily (although this is quite rare). If certain creams, particularly heavy products designed to treat wrinkles on the skin make your face itch or burn or cause any redness or adverse reaction, you must stop using it and opt for a gentler product that has been specifically formulated for sensitive skin.
