If you have been searching for the perfect anti wrinkle skin care product for some time, you'll know just how confusing the market place can be. There are literally thousands of anti wrinkle skin care products on offer; all packaged beautifully and promising you wrinkle-free, smooth skin and youthful looks.
Unfortunately, once you have parted with your money and tried the product out for yourself, the reality is often very different indeed. You may notice a slight improvement initially, but the long term improvements are often quite disappointing.
So, how can you ensure you get the right product first time instead of wasting all your money on lotions and potions that just don't work?
Well, the first thing to remember is that price is not necessarily the key to good skin care products. There are plenty of excellent creams and lotions available over the counter that will do just as good a job as the $150 designer alternatives.
All you need is a little knowledge about what makes a good anti wrinkle cream. Here are some of the ingredients that have been proven to work:
Humectants and moisturisers
Basic moisturisers work by physically forming a barrier on the skin to seal in moisture and to help the skin retain fluids. However some can do their job too well and, ironically, end up clogging pores, causing spots and making the skin look worse than it did in the first place. If you are going to use moisturizers like petroleum jelly, make sure you use it sparingly and apply it gently with fingertips.
Humectants work in the opposite way by actively drawing water into the skin. These moisturising agents usually come in the form of sodium hyaluronate or glycerine - a product commonly used to treat dry and chapped lips.
Antioxidants
An antioxidant is a substance that reduces the harmful effects of oxidation. Where the skin is concerned, this means the body is better equipped to fight the aging process. Citrus fruits are known to contain relatively high levels of these antioxidants, and have also been linked with the treatment of skin cancer. Skin care products are likely to be clearly listed if they contain any anti-oxidants. The most common sources are found in ingredients like Coenzyme Q10, vitamin C and vitamin E (which might also be labeled as tocopherol acetate or alpha tocopherol).
Retinoids
Retinoids are the new buzz word of the anti wrinkle world. Essentially they are compound substances related to vitamin A which have been shown to increase collagenic actively within the skin. In layman's terms, they help to prevent and improve the appearance of wrinkles.
Retin-A is probably the most widely documented retinoic acid, and for good reason. It is the best researched and most proven topical anti wrinkle cream around, and has been for the last forty years. However, a new retinoid known as Tazarotene has recently come onto the market.
