Microdermabrasion is quite a new addition to the various anti wrinkle and wrinkle removal treatments that are currently available. Its name pretty much sums up the way the process works; small (hence micro) particles are swept across the skin (derma) to remove the upper surface (abrasion).

The particles are tiny crystals that are made up of various salt and sodium elements and, as well as helping in the removal of wrinkles, can help reduce the appearance of acne and small and superficial scars. It has also been shown to improve the general appearance of the skin; this is because the upper surface of the skin is removed, thereby allowing brighter, healthier cells to emerge.

Please note that this course of therapy is not used to remedy spider veins, thread veins, deep scarring or very dark patches of skin.

How long will it take?

If you are just treating the face, it should only take around twenty to thirty minutes. If wrinkles are also being removed on the neck and chest, the whole process may take up to, or even longer than an hour.

How many treatments will I need?

That will vary depending on the severity of your wrinkles as well as your desired look. You can, however, receive the treatment every two to four weeks.

Will it hurt?

No, it should just feel like you are having the skin cleansed with a slightly coarse loofah or sponge. You should not feel any discomfort afterwards, and can even put on makeup straight away if you want to.

Are there any side-effects?

There have been some cases where the treatment has been carried out too deeply and some superficial bruising has occurred. This bruising usually fades within a few days. Please note, however, that in the case of darker skin types, any bruising or changes to skin pigmentation can last longer.
