Published in 2001, The Wrinkle Cure is a book written by Nicholas Perricone, a skin expert from Yale University. Within the book, Perricone discusses a number of skin-enhancing wrinkle treatments and programs, but one of the most talked about topics is his wrinkle cure diet.
The Wrinkle Cure Diet is effectively a healthy eating plan aimed at boosting nutrition and general health and thereby improving a person's skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
Diet ideas for treating wrinkles
The first step of the plan is to drink lots of water. This may seem like an obvious thing to say, but thousands of people in the UK still aren't drinking enough. The whole diet may seem quite obvious to some people, as it is really a very sensible approach to eating; the fact that your skin may appear younger as you follow the plan is merely a bi-product of the improvements you are making to your diet and health. Below is a summary of the food stuffs that Perricone recommends:
Fruits and vegetables
Perricone believes dark-colored fruits like berries benefit the skin better than light-colored varieties such as bananas, and he warns readers to steer clear of dried fruit. He recommends a variety of vegetables, either frozen or fresh, including bell peppers, spinach, avocado and tomatoes.
Fats
Many people see this category of foods as something they need to avoid, but not so says Perricone. Whilst he does advise readers to avoid a variety of fats, namely polyunsaturated, saturated and trans-fats, he promotes the use of olive oil (preferably extra virgin). He also tells readers to eat lots of fatty fish, like sardines, tuna and salmon which are all high in two important omega-3 fatty acids: EPA and DHA.
Protein
The general theory here is that, however much protein you eat, make sure it is high quality. Opt for the best chicken and turkey fillets (skinless) as well as fish sources like wild salmon and egg whites.
Dairy
The book tells readers to reduce consumption of milk or to cut it out of their diets altogether. All dairy should ideally be organic and limited to yoghurt and some cheeses, feta being the most acceptable.
Carbohydrates
The Wrinkle Plan advocates the inclusion of carbs in the diet, but only those with a low glycemic content like whole grains, lentils and beans.
To find out more about the glycemic content of food, it is now possible to buy a piece of software to accompany the diet. Marketed by NutriGenie, it calculates nutrient and glycemic quantities of a range of foods to help you stick to the plan and combat aging and unhealthy skin.
