The IWF put in place a number of rules to regulate the sport, which are constantly revised and modified. There are many rules that govern weightlifting competitions. These include weight categories, clothing regulations and time restraints. There are also many guidelines concerning the equipment that is used. To be of competition calibre all weightlifting equipment must undergo stringent testing and be up to the standards and regulations specified by the International Weightlifting Federation.
Exact measurements and weights are extremely important in the sport of weightlifting and must be precise to be of competition quality. The IWF technical rules, point 3.1.1 states, “ Only barbells meeting IWF specifications and approval may be used in weightlifting competitions under its jurisdiction.” Bars must be twenty kg for men and fifteen kg for women. Other precise measurements include the length of the bar, the diameter of the bar, disc weights and corresponding colours. Rules stipulate the disc rubber coatings, the tolerance of the weights and markings on the bar.
Certain brands have become synonymous with this level of quality, superiority and competition standard. Two prominent manufacturers in weightlifting apparel are Eleiko and Ivanko. These brands rank highly in competition equipment and are approved if not endorsed by the governing federations.
Eleiko is present on the approved list of the International Weightlifting Federation and the International Power lifting Federation. They are also the only products to be endorsed by the Power lifting Federation as the brand that meets specifications for all equipment they manufacture and are advertised on the IWF web site. Eleiko products were first used in competitions back in 1959 and they have been progressing ever since. Eleiko has been the official supplier of weightlifting products for the World Weightlifting Championships as well as the Olympic games, various international and national events. Based in Sweden, they are dedicated to ensure all of their equipment meets higher than required standards and can be found in over one hundred and thirty countries. Most famous for their bar which endures precision testing and stringent quality control.
Another of the top weightlifting suppliers is the Ivanko Barbell Company, which has been around since 1967. Their weightlifting equipment meets the required standards and they are approved by the IWF and IPF. They strive to constantly upgrade and renew their equipment and are in the pursuit of excellence. Many gyms carry their equipment and they can be found worldwide.
Other weightlifting supply companies that feature prominently in the world of professional weightlifting include Pacillo and Uesaka, both approved by the IWF and suitable for competition entry.
