Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or Apnoea as it is sometimes spelt, is the most common sub- type of a condition known as Sleep Apnea. Said to effect just over 2 percent of sleepers, Sleep Apnea is most common amongst individuals who are substantially overweight and typically already have a snoring problem.

Whilst snoring occurs when a person's airway becomes partially obstructed, Obstructive Sleep Apnea results when the airway collapses inwards and becomes completely obstructed. This causes sufferers to wheeze and struggle for air for up to fifteen seconds before jolting awake and taking a breath. These episodes can occur over 200 times in a single night and may be particularly disturbing for partners who are forced to watch the situation unfold.

Both the immediate and the long term effects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea can be incredibly debilitating. Sufferers will usually sleep extremely lightly so as to try and keep their throat muscles tense and their air passages open throughout the night. This results in disrupted sleep cycles whereby the body is robbed of the benefits of REM sleep. This in turn leads to drowsiness, mood swings and memory loss and depression.

During a single night the brain will repeatedly be deprived of oxygen, which in turn causes the heart rate to increase substantially so as to pump blood more quickly around the body. Over time this can lead to an irregular heart beat, enlargement of the heart as well as high blood pressure. In their desperation, sufferers often turn to anti-depressants, and sleeping tablets which in turn merely succeed in making the condition worse.
