Do human growth hormone supplements work?

Human growth hormone supplements are a highly profitable business and when money’s the main motivating factor the waters get muddied very quickly. Separating fact from fiction is a tricky business and the best piece of advice is to seek independent medical counsel from your physician. In the meantime it’s a good idea to do as much research as possible, but don’t believe everything that you read. Websites promoting human growth hormone supplements often ‘overlook’ the following facts:

If you visit the New England Journal of Medicine’s website to read the much ‘quoted’ (or misquoted) 1990 study by Dr. Daniel Rudman you’ll find that the report is prefaced by an Editor’s Note. The article sets the record straight on Internet advertisers “erroneously” using the journal’s findings to promote HGH supplements. The most interesting sentence reads “although the findings of the study were biologically interesting, the duration of treatment was so short that side effects were unlikely to have emerged, and it was clear that the results were not sufficient to serve as a basis for treatment recommendations”.

The following excerpt from a press release issued in 1999 by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists clearly outlines their attitude towards the efficacy of human growth hormone supplements “the clinical use of growth hormone for catabolic illnesses, as an anti-aging treatment, or for patients with visceral obesity is not recommended”.

Dr. Robert Butler (professor of Geriatrics and founder of The International Longevity Center) is another clinical expert who often has his words carefully ‘edited’ to support dubious salesmen’s claims. However, there’s little scope for misinterpretation in the following statement “when someone is told something will slow or reverse aging, they should realize there is no assurance whatsoever that this is the case and that it may harm them” if that leaves you with any doubts he later goes on to say “so-called anti aging medicine is largely a sham.”

In 2002 the leading US science journal Scientific American published an article entitled No Truth to the Fountain of Youth written by three leading aging specialists (L.Hayflick, B.A. Carnes and S.J. Olshansky) and supported by a further ‘51 internationally recognized investigators’. The following quotes tell the story “No currently marketed intervention, none, has yet been proved to slow, stop or reverse human aging, and some can be downright dangerous… Anyone purporting to offer an anti-aging product today is either mistaken or lying.”
