Here’s how the case has been unfolding in the media:
Background:
HGH was first identified in the 1950s as a treatment for Growth Hormone Deficiency (short stature). Initially the hormone was extracted from the pituitary gland of cadavers which clearly limited the substance’s commercial success. Pharmaceutical companies saw a gap in the market and began to work on producing a synthetic replica. The clinical results were impressive and the FDA soon approved HGH injections on prescription. In 1990 an American physician (named Dr Daniel Rudman) found that HGH injections also caused ‘unaided’ weight loss and muscle-build. When his findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine an entire industry sprung up overnight.
The case for HGH releasers:
Manufacturers love to ‘quote’ Dr Rudman’s study (and a number of subsequent trials) to support their marketing claims. In addition to this ‘scientific proof’ there’s a ceaseless supply of glowing testimonials and rosy anecdotes; besides HGH has been approved by the FDA.
The case against HGH releasers:
The prosecution begins by setting the record straight on a couple of fundamental points:
Yes:HGH injections have been clinically shown to increase muscle and trigger weight loss, but there’s absolutely no scientific proof that HGH releasers (sprays or tablets) have the same effect.
Yes: HGH has been approved by the FDA for a number of treatments; none of which has anything to do with anti aging.
The next step:
To remind everyone that HGH is a prescribed medicine and can only be legally sold ‘over the counter’ at dilutions of less than 2001ng/ml (approximately 1% of the prescribed adult dose. Consequently HGH releasers can only work in one of two ways: homoeopathically (HGH sprays) or as secretagogues (tablets which aim to stimulate the production of HGH by providing the pituitary gland with all the necessary ‘ingredients’. Lamentably there isn’t much data to support the validity of either method of treatment.
Conclusions:
It’s easy to see why the scientific jury’s still out on this one. Every fresh scientific report and every new sales pitch seems to further muddy the waters; leaving the consumer disorientated and not knowing which way to turn. Unfortunately the only way to untangle the mess is to talk through all the issues with an independent medical professional, such as your physician.
