What is anti aging HGH?

Ever since the Babylonian king Gilgamesh descended into the Underworld in the quest for eternal life (back in 2000 BC) mankind has been searching for ways to turn back the biological clock. Perhaps if he had spent more time in the laboratory and less time indulging in ‘heroic’ pastimes he might have found the answer. The American endocrinologist Dr Rudman certainly thought he had in 1991 after a landmark experiment measuring the effects of HGH on body fat and muscle development.

Human Growth Hormone first came to the public’s attention in the 1950s when it was used to promote impeded growth in HGH deficient children. The results impressed the medical world; however, HGH use was limited due to the complexity of the molecule and it took pharmacologists until the mid 1980s to replicate HGH in the lab. HGH was soon given FDA approval for use in individuals with growth hormone deficiencies.

By the beginning of the 1990s scientists were beginning to look at other uses for HGH. It was already known that natural HGH secretion reached a peak during adolescence then declined to about 50% by the age of 40 and 25% by the age of 60. It then followed that, by increasing adult doses of HGH; patients would be able to recoup some of their youthful vigor.

Under strict clinical conditions Dr Daniel Rudman set about testing the anti ageing properties of HGH on a group of 26 men aged between 61 and 81. Dr Rudman administered high levels of intravenous somatropin (HGH) for six months and found an average increase in lean muscle mass of 9% and a 14% decrease in body fat. He explained this to the layman as a reversal of the ageing process by 10 to 20 years and claimed that ‘The overall deterioration of the body that comes with growing old is not inevitable.’

There’s no doubting the validity of Dr Rudman’s study and the central role that HGH plays in the ageing process. However, this doesn’t mean that ‘over the counter’ HGH supplements have any proven benefits. Dr Rudman’s focused solely on intravenous HGH (which can only be bought with a prescription) and there’s no scientific proof that HGH sprays, powders and pills have any effect whatsoever. However, there is plenty of anecdotal ‘evidence’ although it’s questionable how much of this has been invented by fanciful marketing departments.
