Workout equipment comes in a huge variety shapes and sizes making it difficult to know which one to buy. Most people looking to buy exercise equipment for their homes want a machine that will provide a good cardiovascular workout to burn calories and increase their fitness level. The biggest mistake many of these people make is buying a machine that they do not enjoy using and so it ends up collecting dust in a well-avoided corner of the room.

The key is not to go for the most popular machine of the time or the one others claim burns the most calories in the shortest period of time; go for the exercise machine that you will enjoy using the most. If you enjoy using the workout equipment you will be more likely to use it on a regular basis. An obvious example is the treadmill. It is one of the most popular home exercise machines in the US but not everyone enjoys running. A treadmill can only provide a good workout if it is used and for someone who dislikes running, it would be a very impractical buy.

Treadmills are the most popular exercise machines with elliptical trainers coming in at a close second. Other workout equipment favored by US consumers includes exercise bikes, stair steppers and rowing machines. Deciding which piece of equipment you would most enjoy using is the easy part; it's knowing what to look for when buying one that can be difficult. Testing a few machines in the store is essential as it is the only way to know how comfortable you are with the workout equipment.

Basic characteristics to look out for in each machine are as follows:

Treadmills
These provide excellent cardio and lower body workout opportunities for all levels of fitness from marathon runners to beginners. It is not suitable for anyone with joint or lower back problems. Treadmills come in a wide range of prices from budget machines to very expensive. The two most important things to look for in a treadmill is motor speed and stability. Test it before you buy it to make sure it doesn't wobble when you run on it. Look for variable speed control, sturdy running belt, adjustable incline, easy on-off function and quiet operation.

Elliptical trainers
Provides a low impact, full-body workout suitable for all fitness levels. It works all major muscle groups and it is fairly easy to use. Look out for variable speed control, adjustable resistance and incline functions and handles for an upper body work out. Test elliptical trainers to make sure the range of movement is comfortable and smooth.

Exercise bikes
These too provide a variable lower body cardio workout but with far less impact than a treadmill. Stationary exercise bikes are popular because they are compact and inexpensive. Always test these for a few minutes to make sure the seat is comfortable. Look for adjustable seat, secure pedal attachments and a smooth pedaling motion.

Rowing machines
Like ellipticals, these provide a good full-body workout which is idea for use in the home. Unfortunately they do take up quite a lot of space to make sure you have the room before you buy one. Collapsible models are available but these are not suitable for intense workouts. Look for variable resistance, comfortable seat and a smooth pulling motion.
