In fact, reviews can be a little frustrating and sometimes even confusing. It is not uncommon for one product to have two completely opposing reviews: one user thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread while the other claims it's a useless piece of junk. It is very difficult to make decisions based on such conflicting information; so how do you know who is right and who is wrong?
There are two things worth remembering when reading exercise equipment reviews:
Opinion not fact
Don't forget that reviews are based on the opinion of the person writing it and just like any other topic, people have different opinions on exercise equipment. This doesn't necessarily mean one machine is better than another, it simply means one person likes it while another doesn't. The key to getting useful information from other people's opinions is to understand their reasoning. Why did one user dislike a machine while another loved it?
If you feel a particular piece of equipment has all the features to satisfy your needs then that is enough. Don't get too caught up in the details, rather go out and test the exercise equipment of your choice so you can form your own opinion. Exercise equipment is like a car, you have to test drive it before you can know how comfortable you feel with it and whether or not you would enjoy using it. Different people will feel comfortable using different models, settings and styles of equipment.
Another thing to remember about reviews is that they usually tend to be written by someone who is either very satisfied with the product or very unsatisfied. There are very rarely consumer reviews in between these two extremes. It seems people only feel compelled to make the effort to disclose their opinions on a topic when they feel strongly about it. Don't judge exercise equipment to harshly based on one or two bad reviews as not even the best manufacturers achieve 100 percent customer satisfaction and there are bound to be complaints.
Who wrote the review?
There are some reviews, particularly online, that sound more like a sales brochure than an exercise equipment review. Some may be more subtle than others but there are two things to look out for: language and technical information.
When reading a review take note of the language used. Most user reviews will use casual language, as if they were discussing the topic with the reader, whereas a salesman would use more formal language. Also watch out for typical salesmen jargon. Using phrases like 'optical speed sensor' is not necessarily how you would expect an ordinary consumer to speak.
Technical information is not entirely unexpected as there are many fitness fanatics who may be clued up such things but when reviewing a piece of equipment even they are more likely to discuss the machine from their own personal perspective. So beware of reviews that read more like a specifications list.
When it comes to exercise equipment reviews, there is no right or wrong. You need to make your decisions based on your own opinions and personal preferences rather than relying on those of others.
