Gazelle exercise equipment is a range of elliptical cross-trainers designed by Tony Little, frequently called 'America's personal trainer'. Tony has become a national icon since he appeared on his first exercise show in the late 1980s. He began selling exercise videos and eventually developed the Gazelle exercise equipment range which has become so popular.

There are three elliptical trainers in the Gazelle series:

Gazelle Edge

This model is capable of holding up to 250 pounds and is a fairly sturdy machine. It has a five-function workout computer that monitors your speed, distance and approximate number of calories burned. It can be folded for storage. The Gazelle Edge is the cheapest of the three.

Gazelle Freestyle

This is the mid-range model and has proved to be the most popular so far. It also has a computer monitoring system along with the thumb pulse for heart rate monitoring. It holds up to 300 pounds and comes with a free work out video full on different exercise techniques that can be used to improve and vary the work out. The Gazelle Freestyle costs approximately $200 in the US, which translates to around £120 this side of the pond.

Gazelle Power Plus

The Gazelle Power Plus has 'power pistons' and a split suspension system which provides resistance for additional muscle toning. This model is popular among those who want a combination of aerobic and resistance training. The frame is designed to hold up to 350 pounds and comes with wheels and handles for moving it around. Other additional features include a thumb pulse for monitoring heart rate, a water bottle and an attached bottle or remote control holder. It also comes with a monitor that gives the user feedback on speed, distance and number of calories burned. The Gazelle Power Plus costs around £200.

The majority of consumer reviews are positive with only a few negative points. Gazelle ellipticals satisfy most basic work out needs by providing a cheap, easy to use machine that people are able to store in their homes without it taking up too much room. It is easy to assemble and, in most cases, easy to store. The aerobic work out provided by Gazelle exercise equipment is sufficient to meet the weekly requirements of users who simply wish to do more cardiovascular exercise than they ordinarily would. It does not meet the needs of more serious athletes who want a challenging work out.

The key to success for Gazelle exercise equipment is marketing. It is a mass produced elliptical machine with features that generally come as standard on most cross-trainers but it comes in a smaller and more affordable package. Gazelle trainers are far cheaper than the average elliptical and are a good buy for general exercise purposes. There are, however, far better elliptical trainers available at a higher cost.
