
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM IV separates the episodes which occur as part of Bipolar Depression as follows:
• A Bipolar 1 Disorder, Single Manic Episode - A single Manic Episode and no past Major Depressive Episodes. The Manic Episode does not have as its basis some form of Schizoaffective Disorder and is in no way combined with a Psychotic, Schizophrenic, Schizophreniform or Delusional Disorder.
• A Bipolar 1 Disorder, Most Recent Episode Hypomanic - Most recently or currently in a Hypomanic Episode and previous Manic or Mixed Episodes. The episode or symptoms have caused clinically significant impairment or distress in important areas of functioning. In addition, the Hypomanic, Mixed or Manic Episodes do not have as their basis some form of Schizoaffective Disorder and are in no way combined with a Psychotic, Schizophrenic, Schizophreniform or Delusional Disorder.
• A Bipolar 1 Disorder, Most Recent Episode Manic - Most recently or currently in a Manic Episode and previously experienced at least one Manic Episode, Major Depressive Episode or Mixed Episode. The Hypomanic, Mixed or Manic Episodes do not have as their basis some form of Schizoaffective Disorder and are in no way combined with a Psychotic, Schizophrenic, Schizophreniform or Delusional Disorder.
• A Bipolar 1 Disorder, Most Recent Episode Mixed - Most recently or currently in a Mixed Episode and previously experienced at least one Manic Episode, Major Depressive Episode or Mixed Episode. The Major Depressive, Mixed or Manic Episodes do not have as their basis some form of Schizoaffective Disorder and are in no way combined with a Psychotic, Schizophrenic, Schizophreniform or Delusional Disorder.
• A Bipolar 1 Disorder, Most Recent Episode Depressed - Most recently or currently in a Major Depressive Episode and previously experienced at least one Manic Episode or Mixed Episode. The Mixed, Manic or Major Depressed Episodes do not have as their basis some form of Schizoaffective Disorder and are in no way combined with a Psychotic, Schizophrenic, Schizophreniform or Delusional Disorder.
• A Bipolar 1 Disorder, Most Recent Episode Unspecified - Aside from the duration of symptoms, the criteria are currently or have recently been met for a Major Depressive, Mixed, Manic or Hypomanic Episode. In addition, at least one Mixed or Manic Episode has occurred and there has been a significant impairment in important areas of functioning. None of the symptoms experienced are due to the use of any form of substance, or the result of a general medical condition. The Hypomanic, Major Depressive, Mixed or Manic Episodes do not have as their basis some form of Schizoaffective Disorder and are in no way combined with a Psychotic, Schizophrenic, Schizophreniform or Delusional Disorder.
• A Bipolar 2 Disorder - A history or presence of one or more Major Depressive Episodes and one or more Hypomanic Episodes which cause or have caused a significant impairment in important areas of functioning. No history of Manic or Mixed Episodes. Finally, The Hypomanic, and Major Depressive Episodes do not have as their basis some form of Schizoaffective Disorder and are in no way combined with a Psychotic, Schizophrenic, Schizophreniform or Delusional Disorder.
