An unknown author once described depression as being 'merely anger without enthusiasm.' For those suffering from some kind of depressive disorder, the world will often seem like a dark and barren land. The simplest of tasks such as getting dressed and driving to work seem almost impossible and activities that were once exciting and enjoyable suddenly become dull and unappealing.
Depressive disorders are multifaceted mood disorders which often have complex and debilitating symptoms. The exact type of treatment and medication that depressed individuals receive will depend on the class of depressive disorder that they are suffering from. It is thus essential that they be properly examined and diagnosed by a medical professional before embarking on any form of treatment programme.
Once an individual has been diagnosed as having a specific depressive disorder, the treatment process will begin. There are various treatments that can be used to bring depressive symptoms under control. Some of the most widely used types of therapies to be used to curb depression include cognitive and behavioural psychotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy. In addition, the majority of patients suffering from moderate to severe depressive disorder symptoms will need to regularly take antidepressant medication. Classes of drugs commonly used in the treatment of depression include selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclics, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and heterocyclics.
Many patients experiencing mild depressive symptoms elect to first make use of alternative therapies before turning to medication. When used correctly, herbal remedies containing herbs like St John's Wort and Kava Kava may prove extremely effective in the treatment of depression. Other popular alternative treatments which may help individuals to overcome depression include acupuncture, Reiki, yoga and reflexology
Depression factsAlthough more common in women than men, incidents of depression are by no means gender or age specific. It is estimated that more than 15% of the world's population may be suffering from some form of depressive disorder at any given time. Elderly individuals are particularly susceptible to depression, as are children and pregnant women with a family history of depressive disorders. Those who have suffered some form of abuse and those who are dependent on drugs or alcohol are also far more likely to develop depression at some point in their lives.
There are various forms of mood disorders which are classed as depressive disorders. Some of the more notorious types of depression include among others, manic depression, clinical depression, postpartum depression, seasonal depression and psychotic depression. The disorders are classified according to their symptoms, all of which are listed in a comprehensive manual known as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM-IV. The manual is published by the American Psychiatric Association and is updated on a regular basis.
