When it comes to big business the age-old adage that ‘there's no such thing as a free lunch' rings true, and contact lens suppliers are no exception.

However, a number of the major manufacturers do run promotions offering free trial contact lenses.

Such promotions are typically designed to introduce potential customers to new product lines though, including daily disposables, coloured contact lenses and bifocals.

Getting your hands on a pair of free trial lenses is easy enough (visit the manufacturer's website, fill in a short applicator form and you'll be able to print out a free voucher for your eye-care specialist), but it's important to consider that there are some ‘hidden' costs.

If you're new to contact lenses you must have them fitted properly, and of course there's the cost of the prescription itself. Don't think that you'll just be able to walk into your eye-care specialist's with empty pockets and walk out with a pair of lenses.

In reality most eye-care specialists will offer you a free pair of trial lenses without any promotional coupon, as well as being better placed to give you relatively impartial advice.

Many online contact lens suppliers are able to help you cut your monthly lens bill (by offering free postage and packaging and other incentives - such as ‘buy one get one free' schemes), but websites offering ‘freebies' should set alarm bells ringing.
