Are there any dangers with novelty contact lenses?

Novelty contact lenses are a fun way to make a surprise impression. While most people experience no problems at all, a word or two of warning should also be sounded over a few dangers and eye care.

For many people who are new to contact lenses their biggest concern is whether or not they'll find them comfortable. Today there are nearly 80 million contact lens users across the world, a statistic which should put most people's minds comfortably at rest.

However, while novelty contact lenses are suitable for approximately 95 per cent of the population, there's a slim chance that they aren't for you, so it's important to first check with your eye-care professional. They will also be able to advise you on how to fit your lenses correctly (in some cases ill-fitting lenses can cause abrasions to the cornea), and how to clean and disinfect them properly.

Ask any eye-care specialist what's at the top of their list of ‘Dos and Don'ts' and you'll get the same reply, “never share lenses”. While this may sound painfully obvious to adults, a large part of the market for novelty contact lenses is made up of teenagers - who may not make the connection between trying on someone else's lenses and the risk of transmitting eye infections. In extreme case such eye infections can lead to blindness.

If you follow the above advice, and listen carefully to your eye-care professional, you are more likely to have pleasure from your novelty contact lenses.
