In the not too distant past the thought of buying a new contact lens case was unlikely to raise the pulse. Lens cases typically came as a stark, utilitarian pot of grey plastic which was designed to fit anonymously into your bathroom medicine cabinet.
For decades lens cases languished in the category of ‘necessary evils" that need replacing from time to time (along with socks and watch batteries). However for many people now they have moved from that functional category to one as a fashion accessory.
Your lens case needs to be looked after as carefully as your lenses if your lenses and your eyes are to be protected. This means it needs maintenance and should be replaced regularly.
Maintenance of your lense case should include disinfecting (to remove bacterial and fungal contamination) abd rinsing and treating (the case) with an enzyme solution to prevent protein build up. If you don't, you run the risk of infecting your eye with poorly cleaned lenses (an analogy would be trying to clean your clothes in a dirty washing machine).
Replacement
Even with good maintenance its a good idea to replace the case every three months. If you consider that a new lens case can cost as little as the cover price of a magazine - it's a small price to pay to give maximum protection to your eyes and your sight.
As well as being practical, there's no reason why contact lens cases can't be fun and these days there available in a variety of designs covering everything from the national flag to an anarchy (or peace) symbol. In fact with companies now offering to print any custom design onto your lens case you're only limited by your imagination.
Other innovations include having an adjustable calendar printed on the lens case, so that you don't forget when you're due a fresh pair.
Travel Cases
Contact lens travel cases are relatively new to the market, but are set to soar in popularity. A contact lens travel case typically contains a screw-top well for each lens (so nothing gets spilled), a pair of soft-tipped tweezers (for handling), a mirror (in case you're not near a restroom) and two small solution bottles. Prices vary depending on whether you settle for a mass produced kit, or want something more unique - such as a personally monogrammed silver and leather case.
