Unfortunately girls, it is predominantly us women who are the victims of cellulite. But you knew that anyway, didn't you? It can begin to develop and appear in girls as young as thirteen or fourteen, but most women will suffer from the 'orange peel effect' at some point in their lives. The bad news? It tends to increase as we grow older.
Cellulite can also form in postnatal women and in those who take birth control pills because the waste system can’t get rid of the high levels of oestrogen in the body.
Men seem to be the lucky ones when it comes to avoiding the development of cellulite. Experts attribute this to the different structure of men's cell network, which helps reduce the chances of developing cellulite.
In males the fibres run diagonally against the skin, pressing down on the fat and keeping it smooth. In women, the fibres run straight up and down, creating tall, thin rectangular boxes with nothing pushing them downwards. For those rare cases where men do develop cellulite it mainly occurs on the neck and the abdomen.
Cellulite doesn’t just target those who are overweight; it can be found on very thin women as well. Depite this, no matter how thin you are, if you are going to develop cellulite, it's highly likely it will be in the areas where women are genetically programmed to store fat, i.e. you hips and thighs. In fact women have six times more fat receiving cells in these areas than the upper body, and the higher percentage of fat in an area, the more likely it is that cellulite will appear.
