There is a wide variety of cellulite products and treatments available to day - but what really works? Firstly, the body can be brushed or massaged with a variety of substances such as herbal extracts, algae, seaweed and mud. The body can then wrapped in linens that have been permeated with a variety of products.
The combined action of perspiration and compression leads to a reduction of body dimensions. This effect is mainly due to the loss of fluids and is only temporary. Body wraps are generally beneficial for relaxation, as well as softening the skin but they haven’t been proven to reduce cellulite.
Heat and Water Treatments
These can include saunas, steams and hydrotherapy which help to boost circulation. A sauna can help increase the blood flow from the heart by up to 75 per cent and 70 per cent of that blood reaches the skin. Therefore, any toxins carried in the blood are closer to the surface of the body and will be more likely to be excreted in the sweat, relieving some of the pressure from your lymph system.
Hydrotherapy also aims to boost the circulation and lymph flow, by the therapeutic use of water. This can include baths, showers and water based massage treatments. Research published in the New England Journal of medicine has shown that hydrotherapy may even encourage weight loss.
Electric Muscle Stimulation (EMS)
In this treatment small electrical currents are passed through pads which have been placed on two sites on the body. The current causes the muscles to contract and then relax making them work repetitively like they would during a work out. This may be a simple method to improve muscle building, leading to better muscle mass. At the moment there are no studies to say whether this increases fat loss or has an effect on the appearance of cellulite.
Body Brushing
The skin is the body’s largest excretory organ and many toxins are released through it via the process of sweating. It is important that dead cells do not accumulate on the surface of the skin, as this can make it difficult for toxins to be released. Body brushing also works in synchronization with the circulatory system and is useful in stimulating the removal of toxins via the lymphatic glands. Use a dry body brush at least twice a week to help maintain healthy skin by sloughing away the build-up of dead cells.
