Theoretically it is possible that some of the fat pockets may be ruptured by massage and result in a reduction of the pitted appearance of cellulite. A recent study from Vanderbilt University in 2001 showed that deep mechanical massage can help improve the appearance of cellulite. However, this is highly dependent upon the skill of the masseuse.
There are a variety of cellulite massagers available these are relatively inexpensive and may come with rubber tips, wooden balls and motorized massage heads.
Endermologie
This treatment is a machine-assisted massage system which uses a mixture of suction rollers to intensely massage the fat cells, breaking them down. It also boosts circulation and claims that the broken down fat is carried out of the system. The rollers used in this treatment also help stretch the septa, which can help prevent them from pulling down on the skin and creating the dimple effect that occurs with cellulite. The company that pioneered endermologie is always careful to state that the product does not remove cellulite but reduces its appearance. This treatment is not cheap and sometimes there are a minimum of ten treatments required followed by twice-yearly maintenance sessions.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Lymphatic drainage massage is a technique that was developed in the 1930s. It helps to boost the functions of the lymphatic system, encouraging the removal and filtering of waste, toxins and excess fluids from cells as well as boosting the body’s natural immunity. If lymph circulation is poor, the lymph fluid can solidify, creating thickened fibers that bind with the septa (fibers of collagen that run through fat cells). This process can create thick strands that push harder on to fat, making it bulge upwards creating the dimple, orange peel affect.
