There are times when a mother may have to consider looking at breast pump rental options.
Otherwise known as "hospital grade" pumps, rental units are more durable and have higher cycling times than shop bought pumps. Typically a rental pump is used in the following situations:
1. To encourage milk flow and milk production, particularly in very new mothers
2. When mothers are unable to breastfeed for extended periods. This could be in the unfortunate case of a premature birth, in the event of multiple births (constant feeding takes it toll on the nipple area), or in some case some women refuse to breastfeed.
3. When mother and child are separated for extended periods and long term, frequent pumping becomes a necessity.
The thing to remember when it comes to breast pumps, rental and otherwise, is that if you are always on the move you want something light. Hospital grade units are VERY heavy (due to the size of the motor) and excessively bulky - in other words you are more than likely going to be restricted to using it in one place.
Many women now are probably wondering if there is in fact much difference between a hospital grade / rental pump and an electric one. In a word: yes! A breast pump rental motor is superiorly more durable than an "off the shop shelf" electric one. Electric pump mothers who underestimate the frequency and duration of their sessions will soon find that the motor soon gives into premature wear leading to mechanical failure. It is also useful knowing (while we are on the topic) that if your rental pump breaks down you will not be held responsible, and all it takes is one phone call to have it replaced. The speed and efficiency of a rental breast pump also far surpasses that of any other - you are looking at a "sucking" action of up to 60 times every minute!
PLEASE NOTE: You can rest assured that all rental units are completely and professionally sterilized in between users. People who choose to use a rental pump will also need to privately purchase a few extras, such as tubing, storage bottles and funnels.
Breast Pump Rental: Where to goYour first port of call would be one of your local hospitals. Admittedly not all of them rent units directly to out-patients and require a valid referral. You might also want to try the medical supply stores in your area or a nearby qualified lactation consultant.
If the above leads do not produce any results then you can always turn to your local La Leche Leader who normally keeps a list of rental stations. You can get the name and contact details of you local leader by simply calling 847-519-7730, alternatively you can visit www.lalecheleague.org.
