A large majority of women use both - a manual one for the occasional session when you are away from your baby and an electric one for more regular prolonged sessions.
Most will have a favorite, but unfortunately most opinions are very subjective.
We have tried to present both the positive and negative aspects below.
Why choose manual breast pumps? As previously stated, manually operated pumps are perfect for mothers who have to juggle work and family life, and are ideal if you are only looking at missing the odd feeding time. These units have also been well received due to their simple design and manageable size. Some users have even gone so far as to say that the sensation they produce more closely resembles that made by nursing infant -this has been attributed to the fact that the suction is totally manually controlled.
Hand pumps are without a doubt lighter than their electric equivalents, with some weighing in at less than a pound! The lighter design makes them completely travel friendly and they can be conveniently slipped in to a handbag or carry bag. On top of this you are not restricted by plug points.
With no motors or mechanical parts, manual units are virtually noise free - not only will this make those bathroom stall sessions more discreet and easier to cope with, but your little one could probably do without the unnecessary noise.
Our last point is concerns affordability; manual breast pumps are definitely cheaper than their electric equivalents.
So what are the grievances?Obviously the most common problem experienced by users of hand pumps is the "hand cramping" factor. Over long periods your hand starts to tire, especially in the area around the forearm. A few pumps have had specially designed (ergonomic) handles to minimize this, but even these cant hold off the inevitable.
Not only can the action become tiring, but some women find it difficult to get into an effective rhythm. This usually comes with practice, and mothers should not expect to become masters overnight.
The last point concerns speed. Manual pumps are not usually as quick as electric ones, and this can sometimes prove to be frustrating (there is no dual pump option, as this would prove to awkward to operate).
In the end the choice is down to the individual and you would probably do wise to have both types of pumps in house and enjoy the best of both worlds.
