See - www.gerber.com. Gerber breast pumps follow a uniform one-handed ergonomic design that can be operated manually or alternatively, models are available that can be powered by an external power source.
The electric / battery operated pumps have 2 sets of controls that are easily manipulated whilst holding the handle.
First there is the control that alternates the "Suction Pressure" between low and high. The higher settings result in a harder much stronger "sucking" action - which can be quite painful for first time users. Even though the lower setting does little in terms of drawing milk, it is useful in that it allows the breast to become accustomed to the pump.
The second control is found in the form of a button, which alters the rate at which the pump cycles - sometimes called the "pulse button". All Gerber breast pumps have been designed to produce a constant suckling action that closely resembles the feeling of a nursing infant. Mothers can interrupt the action by simply pushing down on the button. The logic behind this is that even babies take a break while feeding, so by pressing the button a mother can more effectively produce a feeding rhythm they are more accustomed to.
Arguably one of the most important aspects of any pump is the funnel piece that goes over the breast. To make the experience as familiar and as comfortable as possible, Gerber breast pumps have a set of patented SoftMassage PadsT incorporated into their ribbed funnels. One set work the area behind the nipple, mimicking a baby's lips. The second set of massagers is located further inside the funnel to produce a sensation similar to that of a nursing infant's tongue.
Apart from the comfort, mothers will also be thrilled with the convenience that Gerber breast pumps provide. No one wants to be hassled with switching milk between containers, cups and bottles during feeding time, so Gerber has made sure that the pump is compatible with all its products. Mothers are thus able to dispense directly into a bottle and store the milk ready for the next feeding time - simply slip on a teat and voila...dinner is served!
Gerber Pump GrievancesAll in all this is quite an effective little pump, but there have been the odd one or two grumbles. Some mothers have complained that the pump is not as flexible as they would like - namely because the unit needs to be kept as upright as possible. Excessive tilting has the tendency of encouraging milk in the inner parts of the pump.
There is also the tendency to forget to release the vacuum that has been created during the pumping process when you are done. Forgetting to do this can really give your nipple a painful tug. When you are just about finished try and remember to push down on the pulse button to interrupt the "sucking" action.
