When buying your aromatherapy supplies, it is important that you understand what each essential oil is used for, as well as having a good idea of which oils complement and work well with other oils.
As mentioned on the Aromatherapy Essential Oils page, there are five aromatherapy oils that are widely accepted as being the principal oils that should make up any good aromatherapy kit. These are lavender, peppermint, roman chamomile, rosemary and tea tree oil. Once you have purchased supplies of these oils, you may like to think about which oils to combine them with, no matter whether they are going to be blended to create a massage oil or aromatic bath oil, or are simply intended for use directly onto the skin. Please use the reference guide below to help you decide which supplies to buy to work alongside your five basic oils.
Lavender – you will find that this tends to work well with the majority of essential oils, but floral and citrus oils will combine particularly well. Other supplies you may want to try combining with lavender include sage, pine, vetivert, clove, cedarwood and geranium. It can also be blended successfully with any one of the other four oils outlined below (peppermint, roman chamomile, rosemary, tea tree).
Peppermint – this essential oil blends very well with eucalyptus, bergamot, marjoram, lemon and benzoin, and is also very nice when combined with either rosemary or lavender.
Roman chamomile – this sweet and fruity scented oil can be combined with other floral oils, such as rose, geranium, bergamot, jasmine and lavender, as well as oils like clary sage and neroli.
Rosemary – rosemary is fairly adaptable and supplies of it can be combined with a wide range of other oils. It works exceptionally well with other ‘woody’ oils, for example cedarwood, pine and frankincense, but it is equally effective when blended with lavender, peppermint, elemi and citronella.
Tea tree (can also be referred to as ti-tree oil) – this oil works well with spicy aromatherapy oils like nutmeg and clove, and also supplies a nice blend when used with ylang ylang, pine and marjoram, as well as two of the other five principal oils, lavender and rosemary.
