It is possible to purchase a whole range of aromatherapy based products, without the need for a recipe, but if you are thinking of creating your own personal items the following aromatherapy recipes may help you get started.
The best thing about creating your own essential oil blends is that you can choose to include the oils that you like, and to exclude those that you don’t like.
Aromatherapy perfume – carrier oil based
1 x tablespoon carrier oil (e.g. jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, etc)
15-25 x drops of your favorite essential oil
Simply blend all of the oils together, and then transfer to a dark glass bottle or container. Because of the high concentration of essential oils used in this recipe you should only use it sparingly, placing just a few drops on your pulse points. It is advisable to carry out a skin patch test beforehand using the perfume.
Aromatherapy perfume – alcohol based
2 x teaspoons of vodka
¾ x teaspoon of water (distilled)
30 x drops of essential oil (or blend of essential oils)
Again, blend together the above ingredients and store the mixture in a small, dark, airtight glass container or bottle. With alcohol-based perfumes, you should leave the blend to settle for a couple of weeks, making sure you shake the bottle at least once every day to mix the oils, and then filter (using a coffee filter is fine) and re-bottle. Always test the perfume recipe on a small patch of skin before using in case of irritation.
Aromatherapy after shave/cologne
4 ½ x teaspoons vodka
2 x teaspoons distilled water
30 drops essential oil blend
Follow the above directions, and transfer the blend to a spray bottle once it has been filtered. This recipe will make a quantity of approximately one ounce (so if more is required, increase the recipe amounts accordingly).
Aromatherapy body splash
Use the same quantities as above, but reduce the amount of oil to 18-20 drops.
Please note, all recipes using aromatherapy oils should be patch tested on a small area of skin before general use to check for any signs of allergy or irritation to the skin.
