Aromatherapy oils, or essential oils, all fall into different categories. Because of the specific properties that they exhibit, a number of aromatherapy oils are included in more than one category. An example of this is chamomile which is considered to be both an analgesic as well as an anti-inflammatory.

Some of the principal groups of oils used in first aid and in fighting infection and disease are outlined below, each with a list of essential oils that are included within it.

Analgesic oils (pain killers)

Antibiotic oils (help the body to fight infection)

Anti-inflammatory oils (help reduce swelling)

Antiseptic oils (directly help the body to fight bacterial infection)

Bergamot (citrus bergamia), eucalyptus (eucalyptus globules), juniper (juniperus communis), lavender (lavandula vera), manuka (leptospermum scoparium), ravensara (ravensara aromatica), rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis), tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia).

Antiviral oils (help to eliminate or inhibit the growth of a virus)

Bactericide oils (bacteria-killing)

Fungicidal oils (stop or minimise the growth of moulds and yeasts)

Immuno oils (help to build up the body’s defence in fighting infection)

Vulnerary oils (assists in the healing of wounds)

Benzoin (styrax benzoin), bergamot (citrus bergamia), camomile (chamaemelum nobilis), lavender (lavandula vera), myrrh (commiphora myrrh), tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia).
