Sadly, there isn’t one acne scar treatment that will completely get rid of scars for good, even though many claim they can. However, there are plenty of acne scar treatment options, whether surgical or non-surgical, that can help to significantly improve the appearance of the skin. Scar treatments can be divided into two main groups, surgical treatments and non surgical treatments.
Non Surgical Treatments:
Topical Creams (Tretinoin) – A cream acne scar treatment can help to improve very fine acne scarring. These creams work by helping to encourage collagen production in your skin.
Chemical Peels (AHA’s) – This acne scar treatment involves the application of high potency acid on the skin. A higher potency of acid will result in a deeper penetration into the skin. Chemical peels are only beneficial for mild to moderate acne scarring.
Skin Fillers - This treatment involves materials (collagen, a patients own fat, polymer implants) being injected into the depressed area of a scar to help elevate it to the level of the surrounding skin.
Skin Camouflage/Cover Up - If you can not afford or your skin won’t tolerate other treatments this can be a less expensive option.
Surgical Treatments:
Dermabrasion - This surgical procedure was first developed in the 1950s, it uses a power-driven hand held tool. The skin is anesthetized and frozen and the rotating hand tool blade sheers away damaged tissue.
Microdermabrasion - This treatment uses very fine particles to sand blast the skin gently scraping away the scarred layer. Microdermabrasion has the advantage of being low risk with a quicker recovery time than standard dermabrasion.
Laser Resurfacing - This acne scar treatment works by burning the top layers of the skin to a certain depth. The affected area then heals with the old scarred skin being replaced by new, smoother skin.
Punch Excision - This treatment is used for deep scars such as icepick and deep boxcar scars. A punch biopsy tool, which looks a bit like a sharp round cookie cutter, is used in this procedure. After the punch excision has taken place a patch of skin from elsewhere on the patient’s body may be used to fill the affected area.
