Being clued up on acne prevention can make your life a lot easier, especially if your knowledge helps to keep blemishes at bay. A blemish begins to form at least two to three weeks before it appears on the surface of the skin, so you might not notice any improvements for at least a month.
Here are a few acne prevention pointers:
Gently wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser. You could also try using an exfoliate but don’t scrub your face as this may make your acne worse.
Wash your towels and pillow cases regularly so they don’t harbor bacteria that can lead to blemishes.
Exercise regularly, this helps to increase blood circulation and oxygen penetration to the skin which helps to prevent acne. Exercise is also a good way to reduce stress which can also cause acne.
Always shower immediately after exercise or anytime you work up a sweat. If sweat and oil from the skin combine they can clog the pores resulting in blemishes.
Shampoo your hair at least twice a week and pull it back off your face when you sleep. During the day try and style your hair so it doesn’t have to touch your face. Don’t use greasy hair products, such as pomades and defrizzing agents which tend to cause a breakout of blackheads along the hairline.
As tempting as it may be, do not squeeze or pick at your pimples, as this can make the infection spread. If you really can’t resist squeezing them at least make sure your hands are clean before you attack them and always dab them with tea tree oil afterwards.
Drink at least eight classes of water each day to help detoxify the body from the inside out.
Avoid oil based cosmetics and try to use only those that are ‘noncomdomedogenic’ (products that don’t clog the pores).
Regularly clean cosmetic brushes in warm soapy water.
There very little scientific evidence which proves there is a link between diet and acne, but many acne sufferers find there skin improves if they avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates. Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables can also help to maintain healthy skin.
Avoid exposing your skin to too much sunlight, heat or cold. Some acne medications can also make the skin more sensitive to light, so always wear an SPF sunscreen when exposed to sunlight.
