Home remedies can be a good alternative to expensive medicated acne treatments. Very little scientific research has been conducted into these treatments, but many acne sufferers have reported a certain amount of success. Results aren't usually as rapid as those achieved from medicated treatments but they do tend to have fewer side effects.
Distilled white vinegar:
Firstly, wash your face with mild soap and then rinse well. Apply vinegar to the face with a cotton ball and let it sit for ten minutes and then rinse with cold water. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to dilute the vinegar with some water as it can be quite strong on the skin.
Natural exfoliates:
Tomato, lemon or any citric fruit make great natural exfoliates. They work as a natural sloughing treatment, removing dead skin cells from clogged pores. Firstly, wash your face and then rinse. Squeeze a lemon or citrus fruit into a bowl and soak a cotton ball in the juice. Apply the lemon juice to the face and then leave for 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water. The lemon juice may make your face feel like it is burning or tingling so if you have sensitive skin you might want to dilute the juice with some water.
Egg yolk mask:
Beat one egg white and then apply liberally with a cotton ball. Leave the yolk on the face for approx 15 minutes so it dries and feels tight and then rinse off with cold water. Egg yolks contain a large amount of protein and fatty acids which can replenish the skin and tighten the pores.
Honey oatmeal mask: (Ideal for oily skin)
Mix honey (preferably manuka honey) with oatmeal into a paste and then apply to the skin. Leave for approx 15 minutes so the oatmeal absorbs the oil of your skin.
Ice Cubes: (Great for pimple prevention)
This only works for pimples that haven’t actually surfaced yet. If you feel a pimple forming underneath the surface of the skin, take an ice cube and wrap it in plastic wrap and place it on the affected area. Hold it there for several minutes and try to repeat this several more times during the day.
Steam Facial:
Put a kettle full of freshly boiled water into a basin and add a couple of drops of tea tree oil. Cover you head with a towel and steam your face over the basin for five minutes. When you have finished, splash your face with cold water, to help close the pores again.
