Knowing how to get rid of spots is a high priority when you have an all important social event and your face has suddenly sprouted some unsightly spots. Sadly, there is no guaranteed instant solution and what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for everyone else. So what can you do if you have a sudden outbreak?
Here are a few tips on how to get rid of spots naturally, without having to use prescription drugs or creams:
Water - Cut down on coke and sweet fizzy drinks and drink plenty of water instead. Try to drink at least 2 liters (eight glasses) of water per day. It is important to keep the skin hydrated otherwise dead skin cells are not shed as effectively, which may result in blocked pores and blemishes.
Supplements – Sometimes the food we eat doesn’t contain all the vitamins and minerals needed to maintain clear skin so it can be helpful to take a daily vitamin supplement.
Reduce Stress – Acne isn’t caused by stress but it can definitely aggravate it, especially once beyond puberty. When the body is stressed it releases a hormone called cortisol which can exacerbate acne. If you do suffer from stress learn to recognize the signs and symptoms and look at ways to reduce it. Any form of exercise, especially yoga and tai chi will help to increase the blood flow to the skin and aid healing. You could also look at relaxation techniques, such as breathing exercises and meditation.
Diet – Many old school dermatologists and doctors don’t believe there is a link between diet and spots but new research has shown that sugar and refined carbohydrates do have an affect on causing acne. Eating sugar and refined carbohydrates (white bread, pasta, flour and rice) leads to an increase in insulin which then results in an excess of male hormones which stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce an excess of sebum. To combat this, try to increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables. If you need to snack between meals try eating nuts and seeds.
Caffeinated drinks – Caffeine increases the levels of stress hormones in the body which can aggravate acne, so try to avoid coffee, tea, energy drinks and hot chocolate.
