Whilst many products and treatments can help to clear the skin, there doesn't seem to be many magic acne cures that can get rid of your spots for good. And certainly, one that works for one person is unlikely to cure the next. So, what treatments are available for acne sufferers:
Acne treatments and products fall into two distinct groups, those that require a prescription from a dermatologist or doctor and those products that can be purchased over the counter. Prescription treatments tend to provide the quickest results but they can also produce some serious side effects which need to be taken into consideration. Prescription medicines are usually only prescribed for moderate to severe acne they may include antibiotics, isotretinoin, tretinoin or adapalene.
Over the counter acne products may include creams, cleansers, and spot treatments. Many of these products may include ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and azelaic acid. Natural acne treatments (tea tree oil, lemon juice, salt water) also provide a good alternative for those who don’t want to or can’t use stronger medicated products. If you would like more comprehensive information on any of the above acne treatments follow the links on the side menu or along the menu at the top of the page.
Even though an acne cure doesn’t exist you can also help to prevent and minimize your acne by understanding what aggravates it. Here is a list of factors that may aggravate acne.
Acne Aggravation Pointers:
Stress – Stress doesn’t actually cause acne but it can aggravate it, so try to minimize stressful situations or try taking up relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation.
Washing your face too often – This can aggravate the skin by drying it out, which may encourage the glands to produce more oil.
Medications – Acne can be a possible side effect of certain medications such as steroids, barbiturates and seizure medication..
Face and Hair products – Any cosmetic product can clog the pores potentially leading to a blemish breakout. Try to use only ‘noncomdomedogenic’ (products that don’t clog the pores) and avoid using products that contain pomades, petrolatum, lanolin, vegetable oils, butyl stearate, lauryl alcohol and oleic acid.
Tight-fitting clothing – If you suffer from body acne (e.g. back acne, chest acne), try to avoid tight-fitting clothing as it can trap sweat against the skin. Always remove sweaty clothing after exercise and shower immediately.
