Whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, pustules, congested pores or cysts...back acne can manifest in any of these forms, and if you are a sufferer you'll know how frustrating the condition can be.
Even if you aren't a regular sufferer, back acne isn’t pleasant, especially when you’re about to strip off during the summer months or wear a strapless number to the prom. If you have noticed a few unsightly spots sprouting up on your back, you’re not alone, as it does affect many, especially those who have hit puberty.
Unfortunately, back acne can sometimes be harder to treat than the facial variety. It might seem strange, but like other parts of the body, your back does have a lot of sebaceous glands that produce plenty of oil. However, unlike your face, your back is covered up for most of the day.
Like other forms of acne, the exact cause isn’t really known but it is thought heat and friction play a major role in its development. Back acne is common among athletes, and it can sometimes be referred to as athletic acne. So if you are working up a sweat during exercise, make sure you wash your back immediately after you’ve finished and always change out of your sweaty shirt. If you do have severe back acne it is a good idea to change your shirt twice a day whether you exercise or not to prevent bacteria buildup.
When washing your back use a loofah, sponge or exfoliant to help remove any dead skin cells that may clog up pores. Do this on a daily basis, as the more often you get rid of dead skin cells, the less likely you are to develop zits. Use a gentle action and don’t be too harsh otherwise you will end up breaking the skin. If you are using an acne treatment cleanser only use it on the affected areas otherwise you’ll end up drying out your skin that isn’t sporting acne.
When you’ve finished washing always make sure your back is completely dry and avoid wearing tight fitting clothing. Heavy back packs can also aggravate your acne, especially if you are sweating as well. Lastly, if you’re exposing your skin to the sun, make sure you apply an oil-free sunscreen.
As well as acne cleansers and exfoliants you could also try a topical gel or lotion to spot treat your acne. Many of these medications contain benzoyl peroxide, which bleaches fabric, so wear white as it can still damage your clothing after having dried.
