It's ironic that very simple treatments are refered to as alternative acne remedies. Things like diet and nutrition should be the very first port of call for sufferers, not an alternative solution when the drugs don't work! So...if you don’t want to use traditional medicated drugs or topical creams, here are some good (non!) alternatives...
1. Diet and Nutrition:
Many doctors and dermatologists don’t believe there is a link between diet and acne but some alternative practitioners use diet as an acne remedy. New research has also shown that refined carbohydrates and white sugar lead to increased levels of insulin which is also known to aggravate acne. Foods that are high in beta carotene, such as carrots, pumpkin, cantaloupe and other orange fruits and vegetables are thought to be beneficial in fighting acne. Certain nuts and seeds are also great for acne, pumpkin seeds are very high in zinc and brazil nuts are high in selenium.
2. Vitamin Therapy
Sometimes the food we eat doesn’t contain all the vitamins and minerals necessary to maintain and obtain healthy skin. No one vitamin is going to cure your acne but there are several vitamins and minerals that are essential for keeping acne at bay.
Suggested vitamin supplements:
Zinc: Helps to heal damaged skin and reduce inflammation
Vitamin A: Reduces sebum and keratin production. Please note: high doses can be very toxic to the body, especially to an unborn child.
Vitamin B6: Helps to aid in the metabolism of hormones.
Vitamin E: Is an antioxidant that protects the body from free radicals.
3. Aromatherapy
Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral agent which is excellent for treating acne. Apply a single drop of tea tree oil directly to the skin with a cotton bud, or add a few drops to a basin full of hot water for steam facial.
4. Yoga
Stress doesn’t directly cause acne but it can definitely aggravate it. Yoga is a great relaxation technique and it can help to increase blood flow to the face and aid healing. A daily routine of specific yoga poses can help flush toxins and provide nutrients to the skin. Such poses include: Standing sun, knee squeeze, seated sun, baby and cobra.
5. Massage
Massage techniques such as reflexology and acupressure are great alternative acne remedies. For reflexology, try working the liver, adrenal gland, kidney, intestine, thyroid gland and diaphragm points on the hands and feet. In acupressure, the stomach meridian is one of several energy pathways that determine skin functions. When practiced correctly, acupressure can noticeably improve the appearance of the skin.
