Prescription Acne Treatment
Prescription treatments are only used for moderate to severe (cystic) cases of acne and it usually takes about six weeks for effective results. Isotretinoin (Accutane) is probably the most powerful prescription acne treatment. It works by decreasing the amount of oil produced by the skin’s oil (sebaceous) glands. However, there are some very serious side effects associated with isotretinoin, including birth defects if taken during pregnancy.
Antibiotic medication is another prescription acne treatment used for moderate to severe cases. It has been used for more than 30 years to treat acne with a certain amount of success. Antibiotics work by reducing the amount of bacteria in the skin, while also acting as anti-inflammatory. Side effects associated with this treatment may include increased risk for antibiotic resistance in bacteria, yeast infections and increased photosensitivity.
Hormone medication has also been used for many years to treat acne. It requires a prescription from a dermatologist or doctor and is used to treat moderate to severe acne. Hormone therapy (birth control pills/oral contraceptives) works by helping to balance fluctuating hormones. Most hormone pills contain estrogen or progesterone which balances out an excess of androgens (male hormones). Androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands to which can result in an excess amount of oil which may lead to blemishes.
Possible side effects of birth control/oral contraceptive pills may include vaginal bleeding, fluid retention, melasma and depression. The risks also include increased chances of developing a heart attack, stroke, blood clot and breast cancer.
