Tarot readings - an online guide to the cards and spreads

Tarot readings can answer specific questions or give a general overview of your life. There are different systems for using the tarot cards, the most popular spread being the Celtic Cross. The different spreads tend to be more suitable for different types of readings such as if you have a specific question, a decision to make, if you are at a cross roads in your life or a more general reading. Some spreads are designed round timescales, for instance a reading for the year ahead where each card would represent a month.

The more important the reading, the more preparation involved. Some people do prayers or invocations or call upon a particular angel or entity. If answering a specific question, the question should be carefully and unambiguously worded and the person requiring the reading should have the question in their mind. Usually the person having the reading would shuffle the pack but some readers prefer to shuffle the pack themselves to avoid people being clumsy or careless with the cards. The reader should shuffle the deck with the left hand or the hand they wouldn't usually use for shuffling a deck of cards. Tarot exists as a game and it is believed that shuffling the cards with a different hand differentiates between using the cards for divination and using the same deck for the game of tarot. No one knows which came first, the game or the divination system. The cards should be kept wrapped up in silk and put away carefully, as with all divination tools.

Cards are interpreted according to the qualities they symbolize - different cards have different meanings. Their position in the spread and their relationship to each other also affects the interpretation given, for instance, in the Celtic cross layout, the querant is represented by the card in the middle, the card above represents what is above them, the card to the left represents the immediate past etc. If the cards are upside down or reversed, that usually modifies or reverses the meaning of the card, although not all readers adhere to that rule.

Online tarot readings usually require the person to ask a specific question, and then click to give a reading. Sometimes just one card is given with an interpretation or a small spread of cards to keep things simple. Online readings are just as valid in that a computer can turn up cards randomly just as a human can. However it puts more pressure on the questioner to interpret the cards appropriately without the assistance of an experienced tarot reader.
