The tarot card pack has four suits, like the standard card deck, except that the tarot pack has an extra court card (ie King, Queen, Knave/Jack): the Princess.

Each suit corresponds to one of the four elements (fire, air, earth, water), and contains various symbols and meanings:

In addition to the four suits, the tarot pack contains 22 extra "trump" cards. The Fool corresponds to the Joker in a standard deck. Some people believe that tarot cards go back to Egyptian times. Aleister Crowley, a famous occultist, believed it was based on the Hebrew Kabbalah following the Tree of Life structure. The Kabbalah is Hebrew for tradition and refers to mystical and ethical writings giving an interpretation of the World and everything in it. Numbers one to ten in the four suits represent points on the Tree of Life. One to ten are holy numbers in Hebrew and they have the following meanings:

The four court cards relate to certain numbers and the four elements as follows:

Princess	Earth	Ten

This gives sixteen subelements under the four elements. For instance, the Queen of Swords would be Water (Queen) of Air (Swords). In a reading, the court cards would all represent people according to their different characteristics. Female court cards can represent men and vice versa.

Trumps are direct contact with God. The numbers one to ten are the universe. Court cards are points in it and trumps are the paths joining them together. There are 22 letters in Hebrew alphabet which correspond to the 22 trumps and each of the letters also have a meaning in their own right which can be attributed to its corresponding trump card, for instance the Fool corresponds to the Hebrew letter alyph which also means ox. All of these have significant spiritual meaning but they can differ in their attribution. However, everybody accepts that they have a Hebrew/Judaic origin and they represent the paths on the Way of Life or the way God (or the 22 aspects of God) takes the Universe. There are three high court cards: the Fool, the Magician and the Empress, twelve of them represent the star signs and seven of them are planets.

The whole deck represents Earth (the fourth element is not represented by a single card). The standard deck contains 78 cards and the Fool is always card 0. Some decks add an extra card and not all decks follow the Hebrew system - for instance you can get Voodoo tarot cards.
