There are broadly two kinds of wedding shower — either girls only, or the increasingly popular girls and boys ‘co-ed’ version. The bride and groom will be the ones to decide on which of these they would prefer, but then responsibility for planning should be given to the senior attendants. This will probably be the Maid or Matron of Honour, the brides’ sister and mother, and also the Best Man if they have chosen a co-ed aProach. Theme wedding showers work extremely well — tie in all the elements such as the invites, venue, shower gifts, menu, fun games, and entertainment.

For a ‘girls only’ wedding shower, the kind of event you plan should be in keeping with the personality of the bride. Having a bit of ‘sexy’ fun is common, but make sure that the bride is a good sport before you storm ahead with anything like male strippers! For a cheeky theme, you could choose ‘Intercourse’. Get each guest to bring a recipe for spicing up the newlyweds’ lives…for either the kitchen or the bedroom. Include gifts such as ‘The Joy of Sex’ and aphrodisiac recipe books. You could serve food such as oysters and asparagus, and lots of strawberries and champagne!

If the bride is a more reserved type, there are plenty of wonderful ways to theme a wedding shower. A High School sleepover theme is perfect for a group of women to relive their youth — with the addition of illicit liquor! Play truth or dare games, and decorate with posters of the bride’s teen heartthrobs! Keep the food to pizza and popcorn, and make sure that everyone wears their pyjamas. For a more sophisticated version, you could have a Spa theme for the shower, with beauty treatments and massages. Decorate with aromatherapy candles, wear white towelling bathrobes, and choose indulgent perfume or makeup as gifts.

The co-ed wedding shower also works wonderfully if a theme is chosen. Don’t pick something feminine, but rather an idea that both men and women will enjoy. How about a Barbecue, or pizza party? A great ‘couples’ theme is ‘Round the World’, where world music is played — from samba to jazz — and foods are served from every continent. Alternatively, you could plan a cheeky ‘Prom’ Theme and crown the king and queen of the prom! Play music from their actual prom era, and get everyone to wear his or her tuxedos and party dresses.

Whichever kind of wedding shower you choose, make sure that you send the invites out in good time — especially if people will have to travel far to join you. Collect all monetary contributions before the wedding shower and don’t forget to share the cost of including the bride (and groom for co-ed showers) between the other guests.
