I Ching means Book of Changes and was invented in China by King Wen in 1000 BC. He wrote the first lines and Confucius wrote much more in 500 BC. It is the most well-known thing Confucius wrote.

Divination is performed by reading hexagrams which are made up of two trigrams. There are eight trigrams, so called because they consist of three lines. The trigrams have different meanings. The lines are either yin, a broken line, or yang, an unbroken line.

An unbroken line is yang, and a broken line is yin:

Fire/Sun

Different arrangements give different explanations of creation. The eight trigrams can be combined to make 64 different hexagrams (two trigrams, one over the other, to give six lines).

People use yarrow sticks, similar to chopsticks, with markings on them to give the hexagrams. They throw them on the ground and the order in which they fall gives the order of the lines. The other way is to use coins. The coins are thrown down and whether they land heads or tails gives you yang or yin and distance away from you gives the order of the line, ie the one that lands furthest away is the top line, the one that lands nearest is the bottom line. One of the coins may be in a different metal to represent the changing line, ie one that is changing from yang to yin or the other way round, so you would read the original meaning first, and then the meaning when the line was opposite. This is represented by a dot.

So six coins thrown in the order heads, heads, tails, heads changing, tails, tails would read as follows:

This would be read first as the hexagram for yang, yang, yin, yang, yin, yin and then as yang, yang, yin, yin, yin, yin. Then you can look up the hexagrams in the I Ching to get the meaning for each one. Some people throw three coins per line - each line has a chance of being a changing line.

As with tarot cards, I ching tools need to be kept wrapped in silk in a box so they are not polluted when they are not in use.

It is possible to get I Ching readings online. Anything that is randomly generated can be used for divination and computers are capable of randomly generating values. Generally I Ching is used for business decisions and tarot is used for spiritual decisions because I Ching is more precise.
