Astrology is a study of the way the movements of the stars and planets have an influence on the world, and the resulting horoscopes created can be used to aide psychic prediction. The Zodiac is a belt of the Heavens around Earth divided up into twelve by astrologers to give the twelve signs of the Zodiac. Each sign has a symbol and is associated with a different element: earth, fire, water and air. The Sun moves through the Zodiac during the course of the year spending approximately one month in each sign. The sign the Sun was in when you are born gives your sun or star sign. Astrologers also refer to the position the Moon and planets are in, in relation to your star sign, to assess your personality and predict your future.

The twelve signs are:

Aries

21 March-20 April. This is the first sign of the zodiac. Aries means ram and is a Fire sign.

Taurus

21 April-21 May. Taurus means bull and is associated with Earth.

Gemini

22 May–21 June. Gemini is the sign of the twins and is an Air sign.

Cancer

22 June-23 July. Cancer is the crab and is a Water sign.

Leo

24 July–23 August. Leo means lion and is a fire sign.

Virgo

24 August-23 September. Virgo refers to the Virgin and is an Earth sign.

Libra

24 September–23 October. This is the scales. Libra is an Air sign.

Scorpio

24 October-23 November. Scorpio is symbolised by a scorpion and is a Water sign.

Sagittarius

23 November–21 December. Sagittarius means arrow. This sign is a centaur, half man, half horse holding a bow and arrow. Sagittarius is a Fire sign.

Capricorn

22 December–20 January. Capricorn means goat and is an Earth sign.

Aquarius

21 January–19 February. Aquarius is the water bearer and is associated with Air.

Pisces

20 February-20 March. The symbol for Pisces is two fish swimming in opposite directions. Pisces is a Water sign.

The dates can vary slightly within a day or two year from year. The point when the Sun is leaving one sign and moving into another one is referred to as the cusp. If born near the cusp, you may need to check which star sign you belong to.

A horoscope is a reading based on the position of the Sun, Moon and planets at the time you were born. Astrologers draw up birth charts using the time, date, month and year of your birth. Using the exact time to the minute gives a more accurate and detailed reading than just the day. Most magazines and newspapers give very general horoscopes for each of the twelve star signs.

There are many websites where you can read your horoscope - some will draw up a birth chart for you and give you a specific reading. Some websites let you sign up for daily horoscopes by email, and some have specific horoscopes for love, work, travel etc. Free horoscopes tend to be more generalised, similar to those in magazines and newspapers.
