Depending on a psychic can be as addictive as anything else in the modern world, such as gambling, or alcohol. It can be anything from obsessively looking at your horoscope every day to spending a fortune on psychic chat lines. People who are vulnerable and needy can become dependent on talking to psychics if they are not careful. The appeal of being able to give up responsibility for our lives and ask someone else to make our decisions for us can be overwhelming.

Many people consult psychics because they need someone to talk to - a spiritual form of counselling. People often consult psychics hoping they will tell them what they need to hear. If they don't hear what they want to hear from one psychic, they will call up another until they get what they need. If a psychic is unscrupulous they can build up a relationship with the client, working on their client's fears and fostering their needs thus encouraging the client's dependency on them.

Chat line addiction is increasingly common generally. Sometimes people spend thousands and thousands of pounds. They are expensive and charge by the minute so they try to keep people on the phone as long as possible to get the person to spend more money. This is not a problem that is exclusive to the psychic world. Often it isn't the fault of the person on the end of the phone. The company gives them a set of instructions including a long introduction for when the caller first calls up and tips for keeping them on the phone. Sometimes it is in their contract that the phone call must be over a certain length for them to get paid. Sometimes people who call chat lines are just lonely and are doing it for company. People calling psychic chat lines may be upset and confused, and needing help with a particular decision in their life, or devastated after a major disaster in their lives and it is easy to take advantage of people in this state.

However do not think all psychics are con artists: many are responsible, caring people. When consulting a psychic, choose your psychic with care. Going through a Spiritualist Church, or another formal organization such as the College of Psychic Studies in London can be a good way of finding someone, but the best way is through personal recommendation.
