Chakras are the seven main energy centres in the body which can be used for balancing and healing. Energy should flow through these centres smoothly and blockages or disruptions can lead to health or psychological problems. These energy centres, or chakras, tap into the spine, which is considered an extension of the brain running down the back.

The word 'chakra' is from Sanskrit meaning wheel or disk. Energy, or prana, flows through the chakras starting from the root chakra up through the body. Prana represents life force and is a term from Hindu philosophy. Yoga and meditation can help open the chakras to allow the energy to flow through undisrupted. Some healers use crystals to work on their chakras - see psychic healing. The seven chakras are:

The root or base chakra is linked to legs, feet and skeleton and large intestine. Problems with the root chakra can include IBS, panic attacks (due to the fight/flight mechanisms being attached to the wrong cause) or overeating to ground oneself.

The sexual or sacral chakra governs genitalia, reproductive organs, sexuality and blood. Problems include difficulties with menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth for women, and for men: impotence; prostate problems; and premature ejaculation. Circulation problems, cuts and anaemia, sexual problems and depression are other symptoms associated with this chakra.

The solar plexus chakra governs the liver, spleen, stomach and small intestine and is the seat of gut feelings. It absorbs life force from living food such as fruit, vegetables and seeds. Vegetarianism is good for this chakra. Problems include ulcers, indigestion, eating disorders when food becomes attached to emotional triggers, low self esteem and not realizing one's full potential.

The heart chakra rules heart, lungs, chest, breasts, hands and arms. Symptoms include heart problems, emotional problems, self-destructive behaviour, bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory disorders, bad circulation and allergies.

The throat chakra rules the throat, neck and shoulders. It is the vehicle for speaking the truth, the gateway between head and body. It is a vital chakra for free communication so energies can link with higher spiritual functions. Problems with this chakra include sore throats, painful glands, colds and drug addiction.

The brow chakra or knowledge chakra controls the area across the bridge of the nose, the eyes, ears, both hemispheres of the brain and psychic functions relating to third eye. Problems include headaches, nightmares, noises in the ears, visual problems, and insomnia. Signs that this chakra is functioning well are the ability to see the bigger picture and picking up on psychic information.

The crown chakra represents the coming together of all the energies, integration of mind, body and spirit, and unity. When this chakra is blocked the whole body feels out of sorts, tired but unable to relax, and worried but unable to focus attentions. A series of minor accidents and a permanent cold could mean this chakra is not working well. Emotional symptoms include feeling alienated from friend and family but unable to feel happy alone and not being able to live in the present, ie living too much in the past or worrying about the future rather than enjoying day-to-day living.
