We have seen Suffix personalised vehicle number plates and Prefix, as well as 'dateless' registration plates over the years, as the appearance of UK number plates has changed. As years have passed by, motor vehicles have seen quite a variation of styles and designs. This has led to the DVLA introducing legislation setting out the rules and regulations on the display of number plates (Display of Registration Marks) 2001. Even today, more and more people have had to replace their number plates in order to conform to these standards.
Previously, the number plates we saw on a day-to-day basis were either personalised registrations or alphabetical registrations, for example, N373 KEY. This automatically told us roughly how old the vehicle was. The same rules apply today, but in a different format.
Nowadays, traditional number plates start in the form of two letters followed by two numbers. The first part generally represents the area in which the motor vehicle was purchased; the second part relates to the year of manufacture, for example, AB01 and AB51 (01 being March to August 2001 and 51 being September 2001 to February 2002). Finally there are three ‘random’ letters to make each registration mark unique.
As discussed, this format applies to all current style registrations. There are however, different formats that can be used.
Prefix registrations – A123 ABC – They contain the year identifier at the front of the registration.
Suffix registrations – ABC 123A – They contain the year identifier at the end of the registration.
Dateless registrations – ABC1 – 1ABC – They do not contain a year identifier but can consist of numbers and letters.
When using a suffix personalised vehicle number plate, it all depends on the type of registration purchased. The entitlement to that mark determines how it is displayed, for example, UTD123A or 123A UTD. Whatever your choice, it must conform to the display of number plate regulations. Once obtained, visit one of the registered suppliers who will all be aware of the rules and regulations they have to adhere to. This should prove to be a straightforward and painless process, ensuring all owners enjoy their new cherished number attached to their vehicle.
