Owning a personalised number plate is seen by many as a bit of a status symbol. Lots of people in the UK these days are taking up the opportunity to have a special number on their car and, once owned, the registered number will be assigned to that vehicle with the keeper owning the entitlement. This is particularly important to know when dealing with a replacement personalised number plate.
As an owner, the entitlement to the personalised number stays with you and is recorded with the DVLA. A vehicle registration document/certificate is your proof of that entitlement. Depending on where you purchased your vehicle, these documents will have been or will be requested to attach the specified number.
From the beginning of January 2003, the DVLA has held a register of number plate suppliers in England and Wales. If for any reason you wish to replace your current personalised number plate, the DVLA web site will give you the closest supplier in your area. It will also advise you on the procedures and action that you need to take.
When visiting a registered number plate supplier, there are various documents you will be required to take. The supplier will need these documents in order to prove your entitlement to that number or word. This could be one of the following:
Vehicle Registration Document/Certificate.
Retention Document.
Authorisation Slip from the DVLA Local Office.
You will also be required to provide proof of personal details, for example, current driving licence, bank/building society statement or passport.
Providing these documents are complete, a registered supplier will be able to produce and attach the personalised plate to your vehicle. There may, of course, be a charge for this service depending on where you purchased your motor vehicle. Motor dealers are an ideal source of creating a replacement number plate. Transferring the information from a computer to a specialised machine takes a matter of minutes and your plate is produced in no time. Although these number plate are easily produced, you may wish to contact your local supplier beforehand as an appointment may be required.
