In the not too distant past clear glass was the primary material used in glazing, however recently things have changed. Research and development into glazing technologies is producing a new generation of ‘smart windows’ (otherwise known as ‘super-windows’) which adapt to changes in light and climate. Today’s diversity of glazes, coatings and frames allows architects to fine-tune and optimise window selection on a project-by-project basis.
High performance, energy efficient windows systems are now available that can dramatically cut energy consumption and pollution. They have reduced heat loss, eliminated air leakage and minimized condensation. Typical features include: double (or even triple) glazing, specialized transparent coatings, inert gases sandwiched between the panes to aid insulation and greatly improved frames.
For the average homeowner much of this glazing technology is too expensive and complex to be of interest, but a growing number of offices are already making extensive use of this next generation of windows. One of the most practical working examples are chromatic glazes that darken in bright sunlight in order to cut down glare. Likewise coating windows with a reflective film cuts energy loss and reflects sunlight; which means a cool workplace in the summer and a warm one in the winter.
At the cutting edge of this new science windows have been developed that ‘self clean’ by repelling dirt and water, while others double as solar panels and generate power. While much of this technology sounds like it’s been lifted out of the pages of a Science Fiction novel; it’s only a matter of time until it trickles down to the consumer.
However, at present most advanced glazing solutions are strictly 21st century (and come with a 22nd century price tag), which fine if you are Lord Foster and have a budget to match, but not such good news if you live in a chocolate box cottage in rural Wiltshire.
