Historically double glazing salesmen have had a reputation for being ‘economical with the truth’ and consequently the industry has had more than its fair share of bad press. The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) was established to regulate the business and clean up the muddied image of double glazing. The GGF is now the UK’s leading double glazing authority and has branched out into related areas, including: home improvements, flat glass, plastics and window film industries.
The GGF serves both as a professional organisation for the double-glazing industry but also as a resource centre for customers who want more information on any aspect of the business. In recent years the GGF has worked closely with the government in ensuring that all glazing work meets increasingly stringent environmental demands.
A successful example of the way the GGF has mediated with the government over legislation came after April 2002. New laws meant that all replacement glazing would come within the scope of the ‘Building Regulations’ and therefore would be subject to local-authority certification. On a practical level this meant that all new window and door units would have to comply with strict thermal performance standards. The GGF took the matter in hand and instituted the FENSA scheme to ensure that all registered installers were complying with these tough new demands.
Today the GGF has more than one thousand members located across Britain. They work in all areas of glass-construction and installation and are stringently vetted to ensure that they provide top quality workmanship. To join the GGF companies have to show three years of accounts and provide reams of references. All members work to a Code of Good Practise and also follow technical specifications laid out in the Federation’s Glazing Manual. They also gave a customer charter to ensure consistent delivery of quality service.
Anyone who is dissatisfied with a member of the GGF can use their conciliation service to try and rectify the problem. The GGF also offers customers advice on where and what to buy and will be happy to point them in the direction of companies specialising in more unusual work. Their list of publications covers all aspects of double-glazing installation and is aimed at convincing the ‘layman’ who may be interested in installing double glazing.
