Choosing double glazing doors and windows is a tricky business at the best of times, and the ever-increasing range of products only makes matters more difficult. Legislation introduced in 2002 (aimed at reducing energy loss) means that strict new laws apply, plus there are a host of ‘other’ considerations such as design, safety, security and cost to consider. To make sure that you get the ‘right’ product first time ask yourself the following questions:
What type of door frame is the most hardwearing?
Most double glazed doors open onto the garden or patio, which means that they will be in constant use; even in the UK. Wood and aluminium are both popular, but by far the most robust material is PVC-U. It may not be the most aesthetically appealing of the three, but competitive pricing, a lifelong guarantee and no need for painting is enough to twist most people’s arms.
What security issues do I need to think about?
Hookbolts and interlocks on the floating side are the minimum security requirements. Double-glazing doors and windows are substantially more difficult to break into than conventional windows (hardly surprising considering that there are to panes of glass to get through) and represent quite a challenge to burglars. However, the other side of the coin is that they are more difficult to break in an emergency. Manufacturers and suppliers are aware of customers’ security concerns and offer a variety of locks and fastenings which can be customized to suit your needs.
What safety issues do I need to think about?
No matter what budgetary restrictions you are facing; corners shouldn’t be cut when it comes to safety. Look for suppliers and manufacturers that are members of the Glass and Glazing Federation and make sure that all products are stamped with the British Safety Standard kite mark. If safety is your primary concern; you could do a lot worse than investing in some Bs6206 toughened double glazed sealed units (manufactured to Bs5713). Companies often inject the gas argon between the panes of glass to improve insulation.
