Double Glazing Companies UK
Installing double glazing is a complicated business and there are plenty of double-glazing companies ready to lend a helping hand. The difficulty comes in deciding which one is right for the job. In Britain more than one million double glazing units are fitted each year; so business is clearly booming. However, double glazing salesmen have a less than squeaky reputation and it’s understandable that customers are often apprehensive.
Today’s double glazing companies can be loosely divided into two categories: you can choose a large nationwide company or opt for a smaller local outfit. There are distinct advantages and disadvantages to both.
The big national companies such as Everest, Anglian and Weatherseal run separate sales and installation operations. On a practical level this means that the salesperson who visits your house has little to do with the deal once the contractual ink is dry. The installation team fitting the windows may be hired on a job-by-job basis and won’t necessarily go out of their way to make sure the work is done to the highest standard. However, the more established double glazing companies are much more likely to be around in ten years if you have problems.
If you decide to ‘go local’ the chances are that you will receive a more personal level of service. Local double glazing companies rely on word of mouth, so a bad job is likely to be worse for them than it is for you. However, there is a flipside and that’s the company’s longevity. Small businesses come and go and a ‘lifetime guarantee’ won’t be much use if the company has gone bust (although manufacturers’ guarantees often remain valid).
The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) is the main authority in the double-glazing industry and membership of it means companies have demonstrated technical competence and a certain level of integrity. The GGF also offers a mediation service for disgruntled customers to help resolve any problems. All GGF members subscribe to a Code of Conduct, which promises quality, customer care and technical expertise.
Since April 2002 all replacement glazing has come within the scope of national Building Regulations. Companies installing replacement windows or doors have to comply with strict thermal performance standards. Check that your chosen double glazing company is registered with the FENSA Scheme (so that their work will be given the thumbs up by the local authorities).
